Your favorite movies and television shows are captured in a
variety of formats. There are two common film formats (16mm and
35mm), three high definition video formats (720p, 1080p and
1080i) and six standard definition video formats (including VHS
and Beta). VOOM receives original content and digitally
remasters some of it in HD to create the best possible image.
Film
When film is transferred to HD, it retains its full image
quality and sound. Movies are screened in their original aspect
ratio with Dolby Digital sound and in glorious 1080i. A format
that bests even DVD quality brings the cinema experience home.
High Definition Video
Content originally captured in HD is rendered in full,
spine-tingling, intensely outrageous native resolution.
Literally nothing can compare for clarity. And HD-originated
images are always presented in wide screen and Dolby Digital.
Standard Definition Video
Many classic television programs originate in a standard
definition format. Standard definition has fewer picture
elements than HD, and although it's not possible to add any
quality to standard definition video by broadcasting and
receiving it in HD, it does ensure you're viewing it at its
best. In fact, the classic program may look even better than
when it was first broadcast.

Before an HD program can be uploaded to the Rainbow-1 satellite,
its rich content must be compressed at a broadcast center. How
can high-bandwidth programming be compressed to a tiny fraction
of its original size, without sacrificing image or sound
quality? Advanced MPEG compression technology is the answer.
The Motion Picture Expert Group (MPEG) is a consortium dedicated
to audio-video compression. The MPEG standard utilizes
sophisticated mathematical algorithms to find redundancy in the
moving image. MPEG compression of information equates with
enormous gains in image quality. More picture information can be
sent because less bandwidth is needed to send the data.
